Treadmill features explained

Exercise Treadmill Motor

Exercise treadmill motors range from 1 CHP (continuous horse power) like the BH Fitness Galileo Program Folding Treadmill (suitable for occasional use of around 3 hrs per week) to a 3.0 CHP motor like the York Fitness Diamond T302 Folding Treadmill (suitable for much more intense use of around 21 hrs per week). In between these two models there is a huge range of treadmills to choose from, catering for all budgets, stride lengths, fitness levels, and usage levels (durability). As a guideline we suggest choosing a treadmill with no less than 1.25CHP (2.5 peak) for running, and for more serious users no less than 2 CHP. Larger motors are capable of taking more abuse in terms of hours and user weight, and they are more consistent at higher speeds.

Incline / Gradient / Elevation

Most home use running machines have an incline function fitted so that the user can walk or run uphill. Walking on an incline allows the user to increase the intensity of their exercise without having to run. There are two types of incline, manual and motorised. A manual incline requires the user to set the angle of the gradient prior to using the machine. Treadmills with auto/electric/motorised incline have a drive motor to adjust the running angle while the machine is in use.

Treadmill Cushioning / Shock Absorption

All home use running machines have some form of cushioning system. The two most common components that provide a shock absorbing affect are the deck and elastomers. Treadmill decks vary in their flexibility from one model to another. Proform treadmills tend to have the most flexible decks with brands such as York Fitness and Horizon having harder more rigid decks. Sitting between the treadmill deck and the frame are small rubber components called elastomers. As the user is running the elastomers are compressing under each footstep, taking away some of the impact. Some users prefer a flexible running surface like on the Proform 3.8, whilst others prefer the harder surface found on the Horizon Omega 309.
