Multi gyms are a great way to increase strength, muscle size, and generally tone your muscles. They allow you to workout on nearly every part of your body in a very compact space. In effect a multi gym is like 5 or more machines at the gym in one compact unit, making them ideal for the home. Safety unlike free weights, on a multi gym you are not suspending the weight directly over any part of your body, therefore if you are struggling to finish a repetition you can simply return to the start position without the fear of being trapped under the weight.
There are many models of multi gym on the market, varying in price from a couple of hundred pounds to thousands of pounds. As with most fitness equipment you get what you pay for. The higher the price, the smoother and more fluid the movement of the exercise becomes, more exercises can be performed, the frames are stronger, and generally more resistance is provided. Nearly all multi gyms work from a weight stack that is connected to the moving parts via a pulley system. Weight stacks provide a quick, convenient, and safe way to change the level of resistance you are working with. Budget multi gyms like the Weider Pro 2000 usually have cement filled weights, whilst higher priced models generally use heavier and more durable cast iron weight stacks. The cables and pulleys contribute to the smoothness of the various exercises, together with the quality and accuracy of the engineering of the frame. If you are considering a budget model, it is worth trying it out first to make sure the weight stack is heavy enough and the exercises feel good, or call us and our experts will advise you.
The cheapest home multigyms generally allow you to perform bench press, bicep curl, lat pull down and leg extension. Sometimes you need to connect cables from one part of the gym to another to perform different exercises. On slightly better models like the Marcy MP3500 you dont need to change anything other than the weight you are lifting, making the whole process much more convenient. You can also work out on your back and shoulders with exercises such as seated row and shoulder press. On some models it is possible to adjust the position of the bench press to work different areas of your chest/shoulders and set a more comfortable start position.
If there is going to be more than one person using the multi-gym then you may like to consider purchasing a multigym with more than one station. Two station, three station, four station and even five station multi gyms are available. They tend to cost a little more, but they perform more exercises and often have more than one weight stack so more than one person can workout simultaneously.
