There are two main types of stationary bikes – upright and recumbent. Upright bikes are the most common and well known and are most similar to regular outdoor cycles with the user seated upright and the pedals below. More recently we have seen the introduction of the recumbent bike, designed with a much larger seat with back support, lower to the ground, and with the pedals in front of the user. Some models fall in between these types and are generally classed as semi-recumbent.
When choosing which style of bike to go for, consider the following features and benefits. Recumbent bikes have a large seat that provides support for the lower back, and are usually considered more comfortable to use, especially for people with back problems or who are overweight. With the pedals in front of the user, recumbent bikes tend to place less pressure on the knees, making them an better choice for users who suffer from knee ailments. However if you’re looking for a more challenging workout and the above problems don’t apply, then upright bikes can provide a more intense workout. They also take up less space than a recumbent bike, which is generally a key issue with home use fitness equipment. There is a greater choice of upright bikes so you’re more likely to find one that fits you budget and requirements.
Spin bikes are a form of upright bike. Generally found in health clubs, there are now home use models of spin bike like the BH Fitness SB2. Spin bikes use a different type of resistance mechanism to standard upright bikes, enabling the resistance to be set at a much higher level.
Stationery cycling is probably the oldest, most popular machine-based cardiovascular exercise and with prices starting below £100, one of the most economical. While there are relatively inexpensive products available, beware the pitfalls. Like all things in life, you get what you pay for - exercise equipment is no different! Less expensive equipment tends to be less comfortable, less well built (beware the creaks & rattles), pedalling movements can lack fluency and can be noisy. Moving up the ranges, comfort improves, functionality improves dramatically, build quality and durability also improve.
Nearly all home use exercise bikes have a magnetic resistance mechanism. On budget models like the York Fitness Heritage c101 this is usually adjusted manually. On slightly better models the resistance is adjusted electrically by pressing a button on the display. Higher value models like the York Diamond C302 sometimes have an electromagnetic resistance system to provide more difficult levels of resistance and a more durable resistance mechanism. The resistance range is determined by the size of the flywheel and the type, size and number of magnets. As you move up in price range the smoothness and noise levels of the resistance system will improve. We advise you visit our showroom to try the equipment, or call us for expert advice.
