Cross trainers are one of the most exciting innovations in cardiovascular equipment since the treadmill! Their popularity stems from the low impact and stress on joints, enabling people with knee or ankle problems to continue to get similar benefits to running without using a treadmill. The unique oblong pattern of the foot pedal is more natural than the movement of a conventional stepper or climber. The result is a low-impact workout that places minimum strain on the joints. Ellipticals generate an impact equivalent to walking. This makes them ideal for rehabilitation exercise, for older people and anyone with joint problems.
On most models of cross trainer you will see the flywheel weight listed in the specifications/features. Certain manufacturers do not specify this weight on lower end budget elliptical cross trainers. It is measured in Kilogram’s and is one of the key components that contributes’ to the smoothness of the movement. Very basic models with a light flywheel weight often feel like there is a ‘sticking’ at the top point of the movement, or like the resistance is hard one minute and easy the next. This means the user has to apply more pressure at the sticking point causing more impact on your knees at the bottom of the movement. It also makes the machine slightly less comfortable to use. The higher the flywheel weight the smoother the movement on the elliptical. Usually only mid-to-top end cross trainers such as the York Fitness Anniversary x202 Cross Trainer, Horizon Andes 509 Cross Trainer and the Tunturi cross trainer range have a higher weight flywheel.
Some machines such as the Horizon Elite 408i Cross Trainer offer elevation options. The higher vertical levels feel more like cycling, whilst exercising the gluteals (buttock muscles) up to 30% better than steppers & the quadriceps, (thigh muscles) up to 60% more effectively than most cardiovascular machines.
There are three main types of resistance mechanism found on elliptical cross trainers. Basic models such as the York Fitness Heritage x101 usually have a manual magnetic resistance system where the user turns a dail at the front of the cross trainer to adjust the resistance. Mid level cross trainers such as the BH Fitness Ocean Program tend to have a magnetic resistance adjusted by pressing a button on the display console. Usually these cross trainers are mains powered, although sometimes they can be battery powered like the Proform 280 Razor Cross Trainer. Higher value models like the York x302 sometimes have an electro magnetic resistance system to provide more difficult levels of resistance and a more durable resistance mechanism. Some light commercial, and nearly all commercial cross trainers have a self generating power supply using an electro magnetic system.
